Sled Dogs

Wanaka will host the 2021 Sled Dog Festival beginning this Wednesday 11th August through to Saturday 14th August.

After having to cancel the event last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, mushers who control the sled dogs and their dogs are thrilled to be able to come together for the annual event which is held at the Snow Farm in Cardrona Valley.

Three days of New Zealand Federation of Sled Dog (NZFSS) sanctioned racing on Snow Farm trails will test the mightiest sled dogs and their mushers.

A meet and greet event will kick the festival off on Wednesday from 2.30pm through to 4pm at the Recreation Reserve in Wanaka.

Dogs and mushers who will be competing in the festival will be available to chat and are happy to talk about sled-dog racing and what is involved in the sport.

With only a limited number of dogsledders in New Zealand, the sport is curious to many and the meet and greet offers the general public an opportunity to learn more and delve into the world of dogsledding.

Three days of racing will follow the meet and greet with the Cardrona Hotel hosting the prize-giving events after each day’s racing. An exciting and adventurous festival awaits as these strong, well-trained dogs alongside their mushers take to the snow-covered surrounds through the Cardrona Valley.
