Having either a squash racquet or a glass of Rudi’s wonderful Quartz Reef bubbles in hand, the women at Cromwell Squash Club’s intro night, Bubbles and Bash, were saying, “What’s not to like?”.

All gear was supplied, bubbles and a platter were provided, and one court was set aside for the children, so that mothers could feel free to bring them along too.

Emma Hill, Club Secretary, explains, “At the end of the year we submit a report to Squash New Zealand, breaking down our membership into the various categories.

We have usually had less women members, and we lost a few last year, so I was keen to attract a few more to the club, and have them on the grading list.”

Scott Eade, Club Chair, and Kate Andrews, club captain, sat down and decided that they would try having four nights of Bubbles and Bash.

“The aim is to welcome women to the club in a social way and make them feel comfortable,” says Kate.

the organisers were very grateful for the sponsorship of Quartz Reef, adding, “We’re really stoked at how many people have turned up to our first week.”

Jo Hamilton, who attended with her mother Eleanor Hamilton, and daughter Sophie Kimpton, says, “It was a really good introduction to squash.

It’s quite nice to have a try without pressure – it’s a really good idea.

They’ve done a great job, and the club is such good value, and a great excuse to socialise and meet new people.  I’m really keen – I think I’ll join.”

The Cromwell Community Squash Club, is a modern three-court complex, following a full renovation and the addition of the third court.

Membership is $20 a year for under-18s, $100 a year for social membership, and $190 a year for a full membership.
