It was fast and furious wind and rain whistling through Cromwell at exactly the time that six Cromwell College junior students gathered round the community piano in the Cromwell Mall.

The bright blue piano has been in the mall since November 2019, and it has attracted locals and tourists alike to have a go.  It was purchased by ArtsCentral as a community arts project, and the painting was designed by Gail de Jong and painted by Central Laquertech.

The students did manage to each perform their music, in spite of the wind and the rain.

The group all learn the piano from either Ruth Stilwell or Trish Copland, and performance opportunities are an important part of the experience.

Cath Forsyth, Teacher in Charge of Music and Arts Co-ordinator at Cromwell College, and herself a wonderful pianist, was with the performance group. She says, “It is great for students to play in public and indeed in front of each other.  The students enjoyed performing and are keen to come back to the Mall in the Spring.” Hopefully on a kinder weather day
