With such amazing community support the Cromwell Rotary and Lions Clubs house build fundraising project, Lot 47, not only funded St John’s $243,000 shortfall on their new station build it also enable the Topping Education Scholarship Fund of $100,000.00 to be created.
The fund was name after Vicky and Les Topping. Vicky’s journey with St John started in 1990. Les project managed the Lot 47 build for Rotary and Lions – “thank goodness” said Doreen Evans.
Vicky and Doreen were exciting to receive so many applications mainly from locals and a few from further afield. Jessica Hinsen is a 28 year old mother of 4 daughters living in Alexandra. Jessica received a grant to help her undertake a 4 year Bachelor of Social Work through Massey University.
Following this Jessica will complete a 1 year Graduate Diploma of Arts (Psychology) to achieve the equivalent of a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology). This will enable Jessica to qualify to enter a Master’s in Psychology as Jessica is aiming to become a Clinical Psychologist, specializing in working with vulnerable children.
Les and Vicky’s 3 children were in their early teens when Vicky rolled up her sleeves and joined St John as a volunteer. Les volunteered at the Fire Brigade also.They would often be on call outs together. The Toppings know how busy Jessica will be studying, working and raising 3 children. However, they know that she will rise to the challenge. Jessica’s success will see valuable skills come to Central to work with our children when they are struggling with the challenges life can throw at us all.
This grant to Jessica would not have been possible without the business community’s support of the Lot 47 fundraising project.
